Three things to check before booking

ACC assistance applies to treatment that relates directly to an accepted accident injury. It does not automatically cover every painful condition or every type of massage.

1

Accident-related injury

Your symptoms must relate to an injury caused by an accident or another injury accepted by ACC.

2

An ACC claim

If a claim has already been lodged, bring the claim number and injury details to your appointment.

3

Relevant treatment

Treatment must be clinically relevant to recovery from the injury listed on your ACC claim.

Common questions

ACC acupuncture FAQ

Do I need an ACC claim before booking?

If your claim has already been lodged, please provide your claim number. If no claim has been lodged, you may need to visit a GP or another appropriate health provider so the injury can be diagnosed and a claim submitted.

How many acupuncture treatments can ACC fund?

ACC’s current provider guidance allows up to 12 treatments within 12 weeks from the first acupuncture session, provided treatment begins within 52 weeks of the accident. Additional treatment may require prior approval.

Does ACC pay the full appointment cost?

ACC contributes towards eligible treatment costs, but it does not necessarily pay the full clinic fee. Balanced Vitality Acupuncture currently charges a $30 patient surcharge for an ACC appointment.

Is Chinese massage covered by ACC?

Tui-na Chinese therapeutic massage may be used when it is clinically appropriate and directly related to the covered injury. General relaxation massage is not automatically ACC-funded.

What happens if ACC does not accept my claim?

If ACC does not accept the claim or the treatment is not related to the covered injury, the appointment will need to be paid privately. We will explain the applicable fee before continuing treatment.

Can ACC cover ongoing pain or an old condition?

Cover depends on whether the condition is connected to an accepted injury. General illness, age-related conditions and treatment for wellbeing alone are not normally covered by ACC.
